ATLANTA – The LSU men’s basketball team took care of all the preliminary duties that are required prior to the start of a conference tournament and Coach Johnny Jones is ready to see how his team will perform on the big stage of the Georgia Dome when the seventh-seeded Tigers take on No. 10 seed Alabama Thursday here night in the second round of the Southeastern Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The game is set for 7 p.m. EDT (6 p.m. in Baton Rouge) on SEC TV affiliates (Louisiana affiliates listed below; full list here). Dave Neal, Jon Sundvold and Jeff Goodman will have the call of the night sessions of the tournament.

Jim Hawthorne and Ricky Blanton will call the game on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network (listed below) with Kevin Ford serving as the studio host.

LSU enters the tournament at 18-12 and 9-9 in the SEC, the seventh seed in the tournament. LSU has won 18 games each of the last three years in posting its third straight overall winning record. LSU is 9-9 for the second straight year and will be in the 7-10 game after playing in the 8-9 game each of the past two years.  LSU in the final week of the regular season split games, winning at Vanderbilt, 57-51, and losing at home to Georgia, 69-61.

Alabama, 13-18 overall and 7-11 in the SEC, moved out of the first round into the second round with a dominating 83-58 win on Saturday at home against Arkansas.

This will be the first time since the finals of the 1987 SEC Tournament that LSU and Alabama will meet in the tournament. The year, LSU as a seven-seed advanced through three games to get to top-seeded Alabama before losing, 69-62. Alabama has a 5-2 lead in games played in the tournament and 103-68 in the overall series.

LSU will be trying to win its opening game of the tournament for the third straight year … LSU is 10-13 in tournament games played in Atlanta and LSU is 45-53 in the history of the event.

The Tigers are expected to start its three All-SEC performers – Johnny O’Bryant III, Jordan Mickey and Jarell Martin. JOB III became the ninth Tiger to earn All-SEC first-team honors in consecutive seasons, while Mickey was on the second team All-SEC, the All-Freshman team and the All-SEC Defensive team. Martin was named to the All-Freshman team.

O’Bryant III is averaging 15.6 points per game (ninth in the league) and 7.9 rebounds (fourth in the SEC). Jordan is at 13.0 points per game, 7.6 rebounds and a league leading 3.2 rebounds a game. Mickey is at 96 blocks, four shy of becoming just the second player in LSU history joining Shaquille O’Neal to block 100 in a season. Martin averaged 10.2 points a contest.

Joining those three in the starting lineup will be Shavon Coleman (8.8 ppg) at the fourth forward and at point guard Anthony Hickey (9.0 ppg, 3.2 apg).

Trevor Releford leads Alabama in scoring at 18.8 points per game, with Retin Obasohan at 9.6 and Levi Randolph at 9.5. In SEC play, Releford is averaging 18.9 a contest, while Shannon Hale is at 11.6 points a contest.

The winner of the LSU-Alabama game will be the tournament’s No. 2 seed Kentucky at 7 p.m. EDT on Quarterfinal Friday. That game will also be televised on SEC TV.  The rest of the Thursday schedule begins at 1 p.m. EDT when 8 seed Missouri meets 9 seed Texas A&M followed by No. 5 seed Arkansas against the winner of Wednesday’s 12-13 game between Auburn and South Carolina. Following the LSU-Alabama game, the six seed Ole Miss will meet the winner of the 11-14 game from Wednesday between Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.
