Sand Volleyball to Hold Purple & Gold Scrimmage

BATON ROUGE – The LSU sand volleyball team will host a Purple & Gold Scrimmage at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to preview the program’s inaugural season.

“We are really looking forward to the scrimmage on Wednesday,” associate head coach Russell Brock said. “The scrimmage will be such an important opportunity to pair the girls up and have them compete in an environment that will be comparable to when we host our home events. It will be a big event for our training and for our program as we get closer to our first official competition.”

The scrimmage will take place at Mango’s Beach Volleyball, as will all home matches in 2014. Mango’s is located off of South Sherwood Forest Boulevard in Baton Rouge, and admittance to all home matches is free as part of the “Geaux Free” program.

Following the completion of the intrasquad match, LSU will host the Purple & Gold Kids Clinic for children eighth grade and younger from 5-6 p.m. at Mango’s. Participation is free, and all participants will interact with the team and receive a free poster.

Kids in fifth through eighth grade also have the opportunity to be “Sand Shaggers,” where they can participate in the inaugural season by serving as ball kids and raking the sand between matches.

The Lady Tigers feature four sand-specific players in Victoria Boraski, Kaitlin Hatcher, Emma Hiller and Meghan Mannari, a former indoor star. In addition, 12 current indoor players will join the roster to compete in the sand. Among them are Helen Boyle, Emily Ehrle, Mimi Eugene, Khourtni Fears, Briana Holman, Cati Leak, Katie Lindelow, Madi Mahaffey, Malorie Pardo, Katarina Raicevic, Haley Smith and Laura Whalen.

LSU opens its season at home at 4 p.m. on March 18, taking on the University of Louisiana-Monroe.  The Lady Tigers will close the season by hosting the Battle on the Bayou on April 19, a tournament where they will take on both UAB and Tulane.
