Divers Complete Day 1 at NCAA Zone D Regional

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Four LSU divers reached the finals during the first day of qualifying at the NCAA Zone ‘D’ Regional. Today’s competition was highlighted by Alex Bettridge‘s fifth place finish on one-meter. Bettridge notched a 12-line score of 632.60.
“I think we fought really hard today,” LSU Diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “Alex’s performance on one-meter was exceptional. It was only three points from third place and an automatic qualification to NCAA Championships.”
Senior Sean McKinney advanced to the finals of three-meter and finished 13th overall. McKinney posted a two-list score of 716.80.
Lady Tiger divers Cassie Weil and Allie Alter also reached the finals of one-meter after finishing in the top-18 during prelims. Weil completed a two-list score of 557.15 for a 15th place finish. Alter posted a career-high score of 269.45 in prelims and a total score of 530.65 for 16th overall.
In the prelims of the men’s three-meter, freshman Zak Rowton just missed the finals with a 21st place finish (326.10). Kevin Leong finished 25th with a score of 292.80
“This is the most competitive field of competition we have faced all year,” Shaffer added. “This meet is all about resolve and persistence. We have two more days of competition and our best events and opportunities to earn NCAA births are ahead of us.”
