Notes on the Tigers
LSU won five games in five days last week to improve to 14-2 entering this week’s action … the Tigers hit .342 (53-for-155) in the five games with 10 doubles, one triple and two homers while outscoring the opposition, 37-7 … the LSU pitching staff posted a 1.40 ERA during the week and allowed just a .177 opponent batting average (28 hits in 158 at-bats) … junior right-hander Aaron Nola increased his consecutive innings streak without allowing an earned run to 53 as he fired eight scoreless innings in a win over Purdue on Friday … Nola limited the Boilermakers to just two singles in eight innings while recording 101 pitches … he walked none and established a career-high with 12 strikeouts while allowing no Purdue hitter to advance beyond first base … Nola last allowed an earned run on May 23, 2013 against Arkansas in the SEC Tournament … Nola is 4-0 this season with a 0.00 ERA in 27 innings … he’s recorded only two walks with 36 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .121 against him … sophomore shortstop Alex Bregman led LSU to five wins in five games last week, batting .500 (10-for-20) with one homer, six RBI, four runs and two stolen bases … in the Tigers’ three-game sweep of Purdue, Bregman hit .583 (7-for-12) with one homer and four RBI … he launched a three-run homer on Friday night to highlight the Tigers’ 10-0 win over the Boilermakers … Bregman has reached base safely in all 16 games this season, the only LSU player to accomplish the feat … Bregman is hitting .429 (24-for-56) this season with five doubles, one homer, 12 RBI, 11 runs and five stolen bases … sophomore centerfielder Andew Stevenson hit .583 (7-for-12) in five games last week with one triple, five RBI, four runs and two stolen bases … Stevenson extended his active hitting streak to 14 games entering Tuesday’s contest versus Nicholls State … Stevenson is hitting .432 on the season with three triples, 10 RBI, 10 runs and five steals … junior catcher/designated hitter Kade Scivicque batted .500 (8-for-16) in the Tigers’ five games last week with one double, three RBI and five runs … Scivicque is LSU’s leading hitter through the first 16 games of the season, batting .455 with two doubles, one homer, nine RBI and 14 runs scored … freshman right-hander Alden Cartwright worked 3.2 scoreless relief innings in two appearances and earned his first career LSU win on Sunday against Purdue … Cartwright worked 1.2 scoreless innings against the Boilermakers, allowing no hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
