Lady Tigers Travel to S.C. for Darius Rucker

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The LSU women’s golf team will take part in one of the fastest rising women’s collegiate events of the spring, the third Darius Rucker Intercollegiate that begins with the first of three rounds Friday morning at 7 a.m. CST.

Rucker, the award-winning singer originally leading Hootie and the Blowfish and now a hit-making country artist, has not only put his name to this event but performs a pre-event concert for all the teams on the night before play begins.

The event has drawn a big star-studded field with LSU and host South Carolina being joined by: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona State, Auburn, Duke, Furman, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest.

This is also one of the rare events played on a par 71 course with a par 35 back nine that features just one par five on the 6,100-yard layout.

LSU hopes to continue at Hilton Head the play from its opening event. The Lady Tigers are coming off a strong finish in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans. The Lady Tigers were as much as 11-over par through the first seven holes and came back to finish the 54-hole event just 8-over par.

Senior Lindsay Gahm posted 3-under 69 on the final day in New Orleans to shoot even par 216 and finish in a tie for 17th. Junior Madelene Sagstrom finished at 1-over 217 to finish in a group tied for 22nd. Freshman Caroline Nistrup posted 3-over 219 (69 final round) and senior Ali Lucas 220 +4.

Those four will be joined by sophomore Nadine Dreher in the starting lineup in the play five, count four setup. LSU will play with Arkansas and Oklahoma in the second wave off hole 1 beginning at 7:45 a.m. CST.

“We love this course,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “The greens here are perfect. Our main focus is that we want to continue to improve every time out as the semester progresses. I feel very good about where this team is mentally heading into this weekend. It’s a really strong field. It may turn out the weather could be a factor.”

There is a 70 percent chance of rain with temperatures in the 40s on Friday with better weather in the 60s on Saturday and Sunday.
