Jolly Leads Men's Golf in Round 1 in Cabo

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Junior All-America hopeful Stewart Jolly fired an even-par round of 71 to crack the Top 10 of the leaderboard in a tie for fourth place overall to lead the Tigers into seventh place in the overall team standings in Sunday’s opening round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate being held at Querencia Golf Club.

Jolly finds himself just three shots off the pace set by first-round leader Roman Robledo of Houston as he is already positioned to earn a team-leading third top-10 finish in six starts this season.

The Tigers ended the day with a team score of 13-over par 297 in the first round to finish the day nine shots back in sole possession of seventh place in the 14-team field. Tournament host SMU and Houston each fired matching rounds of 4-over par 288 to share the first-round lead, followed by Alabama in third place at 10-over 294 and Baylor, Texas-Arlington and Vanderbilt in a tie for fourth place at 12-over 296.

It marks the fifth-straight round in which Jolly finished at par or better after also wrapping up the 2013 fall season at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational with a 2-under 70 at Isleworth Golf & Country Club and opening the 2014 spring season with rounds of 1-under 70 and back-to-back even-par 71s at The Prestige at PGA West held at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West nearly two weeks ago.

Jolly, who is the No. 39-ranked collegiate player in the country in the latest Golfweek player rankings, continues to build on his momentum as he drops his scoring average to a career-low 71.56 with Sunday’s opener.

Rounding out the team scoring for the Tigers on Sunday were junior Curtis Thompson with a 2-over 73 to tie for 15th place, freshman Eric Ricard with a 5-over 76 to tie for 33rd place and sophomore Zach Wright with a 6-over 77 to tie for 46th place in the opening round. Senior Smylie Kaufman added a 7-over 78 on his round to finish the day in a tie for 54th place overall.

Robledo jumped out to the early lead in the individual standings with his 3-under 68 in the opening round, followed by SMU’s Austin Smotherman and Vanderbilt’s Charlie Ewing two shots back in a tie for second place at 1-under 70 and Jolly in a five-way tie for fourth place at even-par 71 for the tournament.

The Tigers are paired with Baylor, Kentucky and Texas-Arlington in Monday’s second round as groups will play in foursomes with a shotgun start set for 9 a.m. CT. Pairings for Tuesday’s final round will be determined at the end of the second round as a shotgun start is set for 8:30 a.m. CT in the finale.
