Volleyball to Meet Michigan in NCAA Regional

BATON ROUGE – The LSU volleyball team has earned an at-large bid and faces Michigan in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament as announced Sunday by the NCAA Selection Committee. Friday’s first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT from Alaska Airlines Arena. No. 3 national seed Washington and Alabama State complete the NCAA Seattle Regional.

“We’re honored and excited that the NCAA Selection Committee chose us as one of the 64 teams worthy of playing December volleyball,” head coach Fran Flory said. “Our team has had a bunch of ups and downs during the season. I’m proud of the fight and determination our players showed through everything. They’ve worked extremely hard to earn this moment, and we’re looking forward to facing a quality program in Michigan.”

LSU secured its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance sparked by back-to-back trips to the NCAA Final Four in 1990 and 1991. The Tigers secured a program record six consecutive NCAA bids from 2005-10.

LSU was one of a SEC record eight teams selected to the NCAAs. The Tigers join national seeds Missouri, Florida and Kentucky along with Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and Texas A&M from the SEC in the tournament field. The Pac-12 conference came away with nine bids, while the Big 10 conference notched eight bids to the NCAA Tournament.

The top 16 teams were seeded and awarded host sites by the NCAA Selection Committee. Four teams will participate at each of the 16 first and second round sites.

The 16 teams advancing from regional competition will advance to a quartet of four-team regionals hosted by Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska and Southern Cal. The NCAA Final Four will be played at Key Arena in Seattle, Wash which begins on Dec. 19.

Every LSU postseason game will have live audio and live stats available inside the Geaux Zone on LSUsports.net.

LSU has earned 189 victories sparked by five 20-win seasons to go along with seven SEC Western Division titles since 2005. The Tigers also are one of 29 programs to appear in seven NCAA Tournaments during the last nine seasons.
