Cross Country Competes at SEC Championships

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior Philip Primeaux led his squad to a 12th-place finish, while sophomore Morgan Schuetz ran a personal best as the top women’s finisher this Friday at Southeastern Conference Championships at Mark Bostic Golf Course.

Primeaux clocked 25:15.03 in the men’s 8k, a personal best for him and the team’s lowest point-scorer at 43 with his 42nd-place finish. The men’s squad finished with 356 points to finish in 12th place, narrowly edging out Vanderbilt’s 369 point finish.

Schuetz finished the 6k in 23:38.12 and contributed with a team-low 90 points with her 102nd-place finish to lead the women to 14th place with a 460-point total.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers welcomed eight members, four from each squad, to personal bests. Including Primeaux, junior William Wiesler (25:56.18), redshirt freshman Kevin Kirchner (28:51.95) and freshman Joseph St. Cyr (26:50.08) achieved this feat on the men’s squad. Joining Schuetz on the women’s side to accomplish personal records were redshirt freshmen Meghan Charbonnet (23:59.53) and Chaiss Matthews (23:47.93) and freshman Ashley Welborn (23:46.32).

Senior Kemoy Campbell from Arkansas (22:58.73) took home the men’s crown, and sophomore Dominique Scott from Arkansas (20:02.81) took home the women’s crown to lead their squads to first-place finishes at 31 and 32 points, respectively.

Other top finishers for the Tigers included Wiesler (70th), St. Cyr (97th) and sophomore Travis Pope (100th) at 27:00.65.

Welborn (103rd), Matthews (104th) and junior Andria Aguilar (105th) followed Schuetz to the finish line on the women’s side.

“We are very young on the women’s side, and the men will need to fight a bit more,” cross country head coach Khadevis Robinson said. “Regionals will be about taking risks.”

Following the Southeastern Conference Championships, the Tigers and Lady Tigers will take a week off from competition before traveling west to Waco, Texas, where they will compete in the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 15. The meet will be held at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course with the men’s race starting at 10 a.m. CDT and the women’s race immediately following at 11:15 a.m.
