Volleyball's Holman Shares SEC Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU middle blocker Briana Holman collected her second consecutive SEC Freshman of the Week award Monday as announced by the league office. She shared the honor with Kentucky’s Anni Thomasson.

Holman is the fourth player in program history to garner back-to-back SEC Freshman of the Week selections. She joins Desiree Elliott (2010), Malorie Pardo (2011) and Marina Skender (2005).

“Briana was a major factor during our comeback win over Miami, and we’re happy to have her recognized by the SEC,” head coach Fran Flory said. “She has been a difference maker for our team, and is a special player that has the drive to get better. If she continues with that attitude and approach, she has the ability to do some amazing things at a high level. I look forward to seeing her growth and development as the season continues.”

Holman averaged 2.40 kills and 2.20 blocks per set during LSU’s two matches at Miami. She was involved in 14 of LSU’s season-best 21 blocks and added 12 kills on a .476 hitting percentage as the Tigers erased a two-set deficit to end Miami’s 18-match home winning streak. The 14 blocks surpassed her own SEC single-match mark and was the most by a LSU player since former All-American Ivana Kuzmic during the 2004 season.

LSU finishes its eight match, three-weekend road swing at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup hosted by the University of Houston. The Tigers will take on North Texas [Friday – 11 a.m.], Baylor [Friday – 4:30 p.m.] and Houston [Saturday – 11 a.m.]. All three matches will have live audio and live stats available for free inside the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net/live.
