Mettenberger Named Manning 'Star of the Week'

BATON ROUGE – After firing an LSU single-game record five touchdown passes in a 56-17 win over UAB, senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger was one of eight players nationally recognized by the Manning Award as a “Star of the Week,” the Allstate Sugar Bowl has announced.

Fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page (see link below) to vote for Mettenberger for Manning Award Player of the Week. When voting closes on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT, the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Player of the Week.

Manziel was recognized on the list along with Michigan’s Devin Gardner, Bowling Green’s Matt Johnson, Utah State’s Chuckie Keeton, Oregon State’s Sean Mannion, Oregon’s Marcus Mariotta, Georgia’s Aaron Murray and Oklahoma State’s J.T. Walsh.

Mettenberger finished 16-of-19 for 282 yards and became the first quarterback in the 120-year history of LSU football to throw five touchdowns in a game, including three to Odell Beckham Jr. Mettenberger led the Tigers to touchdowns on five consecutive possessions, representing the first time LSU achieved that feat since the first five possessions of the Mississippi State game on Sept. 30, 2006.

Mettenberger’s six touchdown passes and 533 passing yards are the most by any quarterback through the first two games in LSU history. His six passing touchdowns are tied with Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel for the Southeastern Conference lead. Mettenberger has thrown for 250 yards or more in five of LSU’s last seven games dating back to last season.
