Teachman, Ernst Earn NGCA Scholar Honors

BATON ROUGE —  LSU Lady Tiger golfers Tessa Teachman and Austin Ernst earned national scholar-athlete honors from the National Golf Coaches Association on Friday.

The NGCA honors student-athletes who qualify with some of the toughest criteria in any sport for an academic team – a minimum of a 3.50 GPA and participation in 50 percent of the team’s competitive rounds.

For Teachman, who will be a senior on the 2011-12 golf team,  this marks her third consecutive year to earn scholar-athlete honors from the NGCA. She is one of five total golfers in the history of the women’s program with at least three years earning scholar-athlete recognition from the coaches group. Present LSU Assistant Coach Alexis Rather is the only Lady Tiger to earn academic honors in all four of her competing years (2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008).

Ernst adds Scholar-Athletes honors to a freshman campaign that also included first-team All-American honors for a season that culminated in a victory in the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship in May in College Station, Texas.

Ernst becomes the first player since Meredith Duncan in 2002 to earn first-team All-American honors and be named to the scholar-athlete team in the same season.
