Lady Tigers Receive '10 SEC Outdoor Title Rings
BATON ROUGE – Friday’s second-annual LSU Track & Field Team Awards and Alumni Recognition Banquet kicked off with a special presentation of championship rings, as the Lady Tigers were honored as the reigning Southeastern Conference Outdoor team champions.
With their victory a year ago in Knoxville, Tenn., the Lady Tigers their third SEC Outdoor championship in four seasons as they own titles in 2007, 2008 and 2010 at the SEC Outdoor Championships.
Two Tigers were also presented championship rings during Friday’s banquet, with senior Walter Henning (hammer throw) and junior Barrett Nugent (110 hurdles) being recognized for capturing individual league titles. Former LSU star Richard Jones was not present to receive his ring for winning the 800 meters.
The Lady Tigers dominated the competition at Tennessee’s Tom Black Track and LaPorte Stadium a year ago in winning the team title at the SEC Outdoor Championships after scoring 132 points in three days of competition. LSU finished well ahead of then defending champion Florida in the race for the team title, as the Gators scored 107.5 points for the meet to finish in second place overall.
The women’s team will look to defend its SEC Outdoor crown this spring as it competes at the 2011 SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships scheduled to run from May 12-15 in Athens, Ga. With the victory, the Lady Tigers would complete the sweep this season after claiming the SEC Indoor crown in March.
Before kicking off the championship season at the SEC Outdoor meet, LSU will end the regular season in Philadelphia this weekend with the 117th Penn Relays being held at Penn’s Franklin Field.
