Softball?s Young and Mack Sweep SEC Weekly Awards
BIRMINGHAM, Ala – LSU first baseman Anissa Young and pitcher Brittany Mack secured SEC Player and Pitcher of the Week honors Monday as announced by the league office. It marks the second weekly award for Mack and first for Young from the SEC.
Young had a memorable weekend as LSU extended its winning streak to 10 games and swept No. 1 Alabama in a three-game series for the first time since 2004. Her two walkoff homers to open the series gave her 24 career dingers and vaulted her into sole possession of eighth place past former All-American Ashlee Ducote on the program’s all-time list. The Fontana, Calif., native also passed the 100-hit plateau over the weekend.
Mack was dominant and notched a pair of wins against the Crimson Tide. She twirled a two-hitter with nine strikeouts to close out the sweep. She sat down 14 straight batters ignited by a critical strikeout to get out of a bases loaded jam during the first inning. The Round Rock, Texas, product grinded out all 14 frames en route to a career-best 14 Ks on 234 pitches in the series opener. She forced Alabama to strand 16 base runners, including 10 in scoring position.
LSU steps out of SEC action Wednesday at McNeese State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. in Lake Charles.
