Notes on the Tigers
LSU freshmen right-handers Kurt McCune and Kevin Gausman each recorded outstanding performances in last weekend’s SEC series at Arkansas … McCune, a product of Norco, La., worked 7.2 innings on Friday night, allowing just one earned run on four hits with one walk and a career-high nine strikeouts … McCune is 5-1 this season with a 1.80 ERA in 55 innings, and opponents are hitting just .176 against him … Gausman, a product of Centennial, Colo., followed McCune’s outing with an excellent effort of his own, pitching eight shutout innings on Saturday night and limiting Arkansas to only five hits with one walk and five strikeouts …  junior shortstop Austin Nola enjoyed an superb week at the plate, batting .462 (6-for-13) in four games with one homer, six RBI and three runs … Nola launched a grand slam in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game against Arkansas, erasing a 3-0 deficit to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead … the homer was the first grand slam this season by an LSU player … LSU coach Paul Mainieri is just four wins shy of 200 victories in 4.5 seasons at LSU … Mainieri has directed the Tigers to the 2009 College World Series title, two CWS appearances, one SEC regular-season championship and three SEC Tournament crowns during his LSU tenure …  Mainieri, who has 1,060 victories in a 29-year collegiate coaching career, is just one of six active NCAA Division I coaches to have won 1,000 games and a national championship.
