Pole Vaulter Laurent to Intern with Nike
BATON ROUGE – Rachel Laurent of LSU Track and Field will spend her summer as the central marketing intern for Nike in Dallas.
One LSU student is selected each year for the internship. The Nike internship program offers students the opportunity to gain experience in multiple areas such as product design, product development, finance, sports marketing and human resources. Monica Ha, Nike representative, said the highly selective internship allows Laurent to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment.
“It takes more than just a passion for sports to stay on top of our game,” Ha said. “That’s why at Nike we seek the exceptional, the motivated and the innovative.”
Laurent’s role as the central marketing intern gives her the opportunity to focus on a New Orleans-specific strategy that highlights the big sports moments as the BCS, Final Four and Super Bowl all take place in the Crescent City from January 2012 to February 2013.
Jennifer Timmer, Associate Athletic Director of Student Learning at the LSU Academic Center for Student-Athletes, said that internships are fundamental in pursuing any degree.
“The internship Rachel has earned with Nike is an exciting opportunity for her,” Timmer said. “She will be able to apply what she has learned through her experiences at LSU while discovering how a major corporation runs in a real-world setting. Internships are a valuable experience for students, providing them with a hands-on opportunity to learn the professional skills they will need after graduation.”
Laurent is currently a junior pursuing a degree in Economics. She also is actively involved in Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and Best Buddies of Louisiana.
