Men's Golf Named National Team of the Week

BATON ROUGE – On the strength of capturing two tournament championships in the last week at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate and the LSU National Invitational, the LSU men’s golf squad has been honored as the Golfweek National Team of the Week for its performance on the course.

The Tigers defeated perhaps the strongest field they have faced in the 2011 spring season while defending their team title at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on March 29.

Among the eight nationally-ranked programs to finish behind LSU in the final team standings at The Hootie was No. 6-ranked and defending NCAA champion Augusta State. The Tigers picked up a one-shot victory over the Jaguars with a score of 3-under par to win its third tournament title of the season.

The Tigers then wrapped up the week by defending their home turf at the University Club with the victory at the LSU National Invitational held Saturday and Sunday. In the first men’s collegiate tournament held at the newly-renovated University Club, the Tigers posted a winning score of 22-over par 886 to post their one-stroke victory over the No. 36-ranked Chattanooga Mocs in the final standings.

LSU now owns four tournament championships of the 2010-11 season as they also picked up two wins in the fall at the Gopher Invitational (Sept. 12-13) and David Toms Intercollegiate (Oct. 18-19). For the first time since the 1988-89 season, the Tigers have earned four wins during one campaign.

The Tigers, who are ranked as high as No. 9 in the country this week in the latest Golfstat Top 25, became winners for the 11th time in six seasons with Winstead leading the program.

That includes 10 victories in 34 tournament appearances over the past three seasons, which is the most for a three-year stretch for the LSU men’s golf program since winning 10 tournaments for the 1983-84 season through the 1985-86 season when Tiger great David Toms was a freshman.

With their performance, the Tigers are now a consensus Top 10 team as they prepare for their annual start at the SEC Men’s Golf Championships to be held in two weeks at Sea Island Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga.

LSU is ranked No. 9 nationally in the latest Golfstat Top 25 power ranking released last Wednesday prior to its victory at the LSU National Invitational. The Tigers have also returned to the Top 10 for the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index as they have climbed two spots over the last week up to No. 10 this week in the latest poll released Sunday night following their win at the University Club.
