Notes on the Tigers
The Tigers won three of four games last week, including an SEC series victory over Ole Miss in Alex Box Stadium … junior outfielder Mikie Mahtook led the Tigers at the plate, batting .643 (9-for-14) in four games with two homers, two triples, six RBI and six runs scored … Mahtook batted .636 (7-for-11) in LSU’s series win over Ole Miss with two homers, one triple, five RBI, four runs scored and one stolen base … he launched two homers in the Game 1 victory over the Rebels, marking the fourth two-HR game of his career … Mahtook also made a brilliant running catch in right-centerfield for the final out in Sunday’s series-clinching win … Mahtook, who is riding a 14-game hitting streak, is now batting .515 (17-for-33) in SEC games with one double, one triple, four homers and 10 RBI … freshman right-hander Kurt McCune improved to 5-0 on the year as he defeated Ole Miss in Game 1 on Friday … McCune limited the Rebels to three runs on six hits in seven innings with four walks and seven strikeouts … McCune won his second straight SEC start and his cumulative ERA is a staff-best 1.90 … in 47.1 innings this season, McCune has limited opponents to a .176 cumulative batting average … senior right-hander Ben Alsup pitched the Tigers to series-clinching win over Ole Miss Sunday, limiting the Rebels to two runs on eight hits in eight innings with two walks and four strikeouts … Alsup defeated Ole Miss for the second straight time, as he blanked the Rebels in a seven-inning contest in the 2010 SEC Tournament … Alsup is now 4-3 this season with a 2.89 ERA, the second best ERA on the staff, trailing only Kurt McCune (1.90) … freshman second baseman JaCoby Jones batted .400 (4-for-10) in the Ole Miss series with one double, two RBI and three runs scored … sophomore right-hander Kevin Berry turned in a brilliant relief outing Friday against Ole Miss to earn his second save of the season … Berry fired two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with no walks and two strikeouts to preserve a 7-6 LSU victory.
