Lady Tigers Golfers Struggle in Round 1 in Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The sixth-ranked LSU women’s golf team found itself on the wrong side of par almost from the start Friday and will have to play catch up over the final two days after one round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

In this unique first-time best ball event for women in which the four best scores on each hole determined the team score rather than the cumulative low four rounds at the end of 18 holes, the Lady Tigers posted a 15-over par 303 over the difficult UGA course and found itself in 18th place in the 23-team field.

LSU is 19 shots out of the lead of Purdue which posted a best-ball team total of 284, four under par, two shots ahead of Alabama at two-under 286. Duke and host Georgia are tied for third at three-over par 291.

Ironically, most of the team standings would have been the same at the top of the leader board if the normal golf cumulative totals had been used but Purdue would have posted a four-over score and would have had a six-shot first-round lead. Arkansas was the biggest benefactor of the best ball, posted a six-over 294 for sixth place but in the normal college format they would have been no better than 12th place at 18-over par.

LSU posted four bogeys on their opening hole, the par-four 11th, and never was able to get much going on the day with only four birdies for the five players in the round. Sophomore Mary Michael Maggio and senior Megan McChrystal, the nation’s No. 1-ranked golfer, had six-over 78s to lead LSU, while freshman Austin Ernst posted 79, junior Jacqueline Hedwall 80 and senior Amalie Valle 81.

Three players in the large field broke par as Hannah Thompson of Florida State and Aleja Cangrejo of Duke each shot two-under par 70s, while Numa Gulyanamitta of Purdue posted a one-under 71.

Round two begins in the same shot gun best ball format Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring can be found at LSUsports.net through Golfstat.net. Follow LSU women’s golf on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/LSUwomensgolf and on Twitter @LSUwomensgolf.
