NEW ORLEANS – Executive Director Kenneth Miles of LSU’s Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes was given the opportunity to serve as a guest speaker recently at an “Empowerment Session” held by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“An opportunity to participate in the Empowerment Session at the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is a no brainer,” Miles said. “This was a great opportunity for me to discuss what it takes to thrive and survive within education: persistence, resilience, and a vision. In my opinion, these three elements are critical to a formula for success and ultimately, is the root for opening up many doors in the future. Essentially, this is the same message we teach our student-athletes.”
The “Empowerment Session” is a weekly program provided by the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office where professionals from the outside world come inside the prison and share their story of success to the inmates. It also gives words of encouragement and life tools of what the inmates will need upon the release from prison.
Miles shared with a group of about 25 inmates his duties as Executive Director of the ACSA in addition to life experiences that would assist the inmates upon their release to sustain their success in society. Afterwards, Miles answered questions from the inmates.
