BATON ROUGE — A day after visiting children at a local hospital, the LSU swimming and diving teams were back in the Baton Rouge community Wednesday as 15 members of the program spent time reading to kids at Delmont Elementary School.
The student-athletes visited every classroom in the school, reading several of their favorite holiday books to the young students, encouraging them to read more often and sharing several holiday traditions.
“It’s always so much fun reading to the classes,” senior Shanna Spears said. “They really get into the stories and have a good time. By visiting with these kids we are able to show them that they too have the opportunity to go to college and be able to give back to the community.”
“It was a great time being able to go to Delmont Elementary today,” freshman Shane Coltharp added. “Being able to interact with kids that are underprivileged is always fun.”
The trip to Delmont Elementary was part of LSU’s Geaux Givers initiative, which engages in community service efforts in the Baton Rouge community.
