Baseball's Ott Named Athlete of the Month

NEW ORLEANS – LSU All-America pitcher Matty Ott was named Friday as the Allstate Sugar Bowl Athlete of the Month for August.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee announced its Amateur Athletes of the Month for June, July and August. Tulane golfer Janine Fellows (June), Peake BMW pitcher Raymond Winter (July) and Ott (August) were the summer winners of  the honors.

Ott, a junior right-hander from Chalmette, La., had an outstanding summer pitching for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League, one of the most prestigious summer baseball leagues. In 20 1/3 innings of action, he allowed just one run for a 0.44 ERA.

In 15 appearances for the Mariners, Ott allowed only nine singles, walked four and struck out 19. He earned seven saves and picked up two wins out of the bullpen. Ott was also selected to pitch in the league’s All-Star Game played in Fenway Park.

Ott, a 2009 All-America selection, has 27 career saves for LSU, just two shy of the school record of 29 held by Rick Greene (1990-92).

The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
