Tennis' Coats Advances to Final in Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — LSU women’s tennis freshman Alexus Coats notched her second singles victory in as many days Saturday to move on to the finals of the Flight 3 draw at Indiana University’s Hoosier Classic.
Coats took out Indiana’s Sophie Garre in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, in the second round. The native of Lithonia, Ga., who defeated Cincinnati’s Caitlin O’Gara in straight sets Friday, will advance to face Indiana’s Charlotte Martin in the finals Sunday.
“I’m really proud of the way Alexus played today,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “She’s had a nice tournament thus far, and she played a good match today to move onto the finals in her draw.”
Sophomore Kaitlin Burns also emerged victorious on Day 2, coming from behind to defeat Stephanie Danesis (Miami of Ohio) in a tight three-set match, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 14-12, in the Flight 1 draw.
After posting a three-set victory in the Flight 2 draw on Friday, sophomore Ebie Wilson fell to Indiana’s Kayla Fujimoto, 6-3, 7-6 (2), in the second round.
In doubles, Kansas State’s Antea Huljev and Petra Chuda defeated LSU’s Wilson and Kylie Adamek, 8-4.
The Hoosier Classic will conclude Sunday at the Indiana Tennis Center with action set to begin at 9 a.m. (CT).
