Lady Tigers Maintain 1-Stroke Lead in Tennessee

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – LSU and defending national champion Purdue matched each other stroke-for-stroke Saturday in the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championships at the Vanderbilt Legends Club allowing LSU to keep its one-shot lead heading to Sunday’s final round.

Both teams shot 6-under rounds of 282 playing in the final wave with California (284) and LSU after 36 holes is at a school record 36-hole total of 560 (278-282), one shot ahead of Purdue’s 561 (279-282) with Cal at 13-under 563 (279-284). The threesome has broken away from Georgia and Wake Forest, tied for fourth at 6-under par 570.

For the second straight day the high counting score was an even-par 72. Jacqueline Hedwall, who finished with birdies on 17 and 18 on Friday, had a four-birdie, one-bogey round of 69 to lead LSU. Mary Michael Maggio posted a two-under 70, Megan McChrystal a one-under 71 and Tessa Teachman posted 72.

All four golfers are in the top 10 and with a legitimate chance to battle for the individual crown as well entering the final day. Maggio and Teachman are in a tie for sixth at five-under par 211 with Maggio posting rounds of 69-70 and Teachman rounds of 67-72.

Hedwall made the biggest move of the day as she moved from a tied for 33rd to a tie for 10th at three-under 213 (72-69) and McChrystal is also 10th after rounds of 70-71 for 36 holes.

The individual leader remains a two-way tie between first-round leader Michelle Shin of Wake Forest and Pia Halbig of California both at nine-under par 135.

“Again the girls played a very steady round and we are in the position we want to be in for the final round,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “I’m so pleased with how the girls are responding as a team. They kept fighting for it and I was proud of the way they handled themselves (Saturday).

LSU, Purdue and California will again play together in the final round on Sunday. Live scoring is available at LSUsports.net through Golfstat.com.
