BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – LSU women’s tennis sophomore Ebie Wilson and freshman Alexus Coats each notched singles victories to lead the Lady Tigers on day one of the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind., at Indiana University’s Tennis Center on Friday.
Wilson defeated Cincinnati’s Ashleigh Witte 7-6(3), 6-3 in flight 2 to advance to the semifinal round tomorrow. The Mobile, Ala., native will square off against Indiana’s Kayla Fujimoto tomorrow for a spot in the finals.
Coats earned a tight straight-set victory against Cincinnati’s Caitlin O’Gara 7-5, 6-4 to earn her place in the fight 3 semifinals tomorrow where she will take on Indiana’s Sophie Garre.
“I am really happy for Alexa and Ebie, they played very good matches today,” said LSU head coach Tonny Minnis. “They both have a chance to go far in the tournament, so that should do a lot for their confidence.”
In doubles, the duo of Coats and Kaitlin Burns notched their place in the doubles flight semifinals by defeating Cincinnati’s Safiyya Ismail and Jasmine Lee 8-5. They will face the Kansas State pair of Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic tomorrow for a chance to advance to the finals.
