Volleyball?s Elliott Honored by SEC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Desiree Elliott made an immediate splash during the opening weekend of conference play and notched SEC Freshman of the Week Monday as announced by the league office. It’s the first career weekly award for Elliott from the SEC.

“We’re extremely pleased with how quickly Desiree has fit into our system,” head coach Fran Flory said. “Her quick and dynamic play has been a key addition to our offense. I thought we did an excellent job last week in practice of finding the opportunities that would work best for her. Credit her and Brittney Johnson for taking advantage of those situations in last weekend’s matches.”

The Cypress, Texas, native continued her strong freshman campaign and compiled her best overall weekend of the season. She ripped 2.29 kills and recorded 1.14 blocks per set as LSU improved to 11-0 on the season with wins over Auburn and Georgia last weekend.

Elliott produced 16 kills on 33 swings for a pair of plus .400 hitting marks. She also has been a key part of LSU’s defense, which has limited its opponents to a SEC-best .141 clip on the season.

LSU opens a four-match road swing Friday at Alabama. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. with live stats available on LSUsports.net. Fans also can follow live in-match updates on the team’s official blog at http://lsuvolleyball.posterous.com.
