Teachman, Lady Tigers Move Up at NCAA Preview

BRYAN, Texas – The 16th-ranked LSU Lady Tigers posted its second straight under par round as did junior Tessa Teachman and both are in championship contention after two rounds Tuesday of the prestigious NCAA Fall Preview at the Traditions Golf Club.

The Lady Tigers followed up a one-under par round of 287 on Monday with a five-under 283 Tuesday to complete 36 holes of the 54-hole event at six-under 570. That is one shot off the lowest score ever shot by an LSU women’s team for 36 holes of 569 posted a year ago in the Mason Rudolph Classic in Nashville.

LSU moved from fourth to second play, four shots behind Alabama which stands at 10-under 566 (286-280). LSU is one shot ahead of Southern California at 571 and three more shots back tied for fourth are the first round leader Georgia and Vanderbilt at two-under 574. Tulane remained in eighth place at 14-over 590 (294-296).

Teachman, from Baton Rouge, followed up her two-under 70 on Monday with a three-under par 69 on Tuesday to stand at five-under 139 for 36 holes, alone in third place tying the second lowest 36-hole total in school history. She is one shot out of the lead held jointly by Brooke Pancake of Alabama (65-73) and Marina Alex of Vanderbilt (67-71) at six-under 138.

Two other LSU golfers are in the top 10 with sophomore Mary Michael Maggio moving from a tie for 21st to a tie for fourth after a five-under 67 round put her at four-under 140 (73-67). Senior Megan McChrystal followed up her first-round 68 with a one-under 73 and stands in a tie for 10th at three-under 141.

Maggio had a smooth round of six birdies with five in a seven-hole stretch from the fifth through the 12th including birdies on the seventh, eighth and ninth holes.

Over the first two rounds, Maggio has had 10 birdies, with Teachman posting eight and McChrystal seven. In all LSU had 18 birdies in the second round after 16 on Monday.

“It was just a very steady round,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We are very happy with how we played today. Everyone contributed and really worked hard to finish off the round. It’s a great position to be in against a very strong field, but we know now we need to keep our focus and perform one more day.”

LSU also counted on day two a two-over 74 by Amalie Valle.

The final round tees off at 7:30 a.m. and LSU will go off the first tee in the final wave with Alabama and Southern California beginning at 9:05 a.m. Live scoring of the final round can be found at LSUsports.net through Golfstat.com.
