Wolf Leads Lady Tigers on Final Day of Classic

AUBURN, Ala. – LSU junior Whitney Wolf knocked off her second top-35 opponent in three days to pace the Lady Tigers’ tennis team on the final day of the SEC Coaches’ Classic Sunday.

Wolf, who upended No. 20 Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss Friday, battled back after dropping the first set to No. 31 Nadja Gilchrist to defeat the Georgia junior in three sets Sunday, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Sophomore Ebie Wilson also enjoyed another solid day of competition, posting her second singles win of the tournament, cruising past Arkansas’ Stephanie Roy in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.

“Ebie played really well, and Whitney just continues to impress me,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “She’s got two wins against top-35 opponents thus far, and that’s really impressive.”

Freshman Alexus Coates fought hard against Olesya Tsigvintseva of Mississippi State, taking the second set, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8), after the MSU junior won the super tie-breaker to decide the third set.

The Lady Tigers resume play in two weeks as some players will travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Classic (Sept. 24-26), while others will make the short trek to Lafayette, La., to compete in the ULL Invitational.
