AUBURN, Ala. – The LSU women’s tennis team posted three singles victories on Day 2 of the SEC Coaches’ Classic in Auburn’s Yarbrough Center Saturday.
Vlaar, a native of Weert, Netherlands, notched the first collegiate victory of her career in singles, defeating Auburn’s Emily Newton in a tight match, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5). Coats, who also came away with her first collegiate singles win, knocked off Jordan Zachary of Mississippi State in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Wilson, a product of Mobile, Ala., cruised to a straight-set victory over Mississippi State’s Rosaline Dion, 6-0, 6-2.
After upending No. 20 Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss in the Flight 1A draw Friday, junior Whitney Wolf was unable to record her second-straight victory over a top-20 opponent, falling to No. 18 Anouk Tigu of Arkansas, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Ariel Morton, who also won in singles on Day 1, fell to Florida’s Olivia Janowicz, 6-0, 6-2.
“We played well today,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “After a rough first day, our players stepped up, and we had some nice victories. It’s a great experience for these kids. All four of our freshmen are getting the opportunity to play some of the best competition in the country.
“After a great win yesterday, Whitney ran into a tough competitor today, but Ebie played well and got a nice victory.”
The Lady Tigers will wrap up the SEC Coaches’ Classic Sunday. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. (CT).
