Ott Named LSWA Pitcher of the Week
BATON ROUGE – Outfielder Tyler Baisley of Northwestern State and pitcher Matty Ott of LSU were named Tuesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.
Ott, a sophomore right-hander from Chalmette, La., was named Pitcher of the Week as he pitched in three of the Tigers’ four games last week, recording a win and a save in LSU’s SEC sweep over Alabama. Ott worked the final 1.1 innings of Saturday’s victory over the Crimson Tide, retiring all four batters he faced to earn the save. He entered the game with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning with LSU holding a 9-7 lead; he ended the threat on a grounder back to the mound and retired the Tide in order in the ninth to preserve the win.
On Sunday, Ott worked a career-high seven innings to earn the victory in LSU’s 6-5, 14-inning triumph over Alabama. Ott, whose previous career-long outing was just three innings, limited the Tide to two runs on four hits in seven innings with one walk and three strikeouts
Baisley a senior from Gilbert, Ariz., was named Hitter of the Week as he hit safely in all four games for the week with multiple hits in all but one. He drove in a career-high five runs in Saturday’s Game 2 of a doubleheader against UTSA when he went 4-for-4 with five RBI, two runs scored, two home runs, and a double.
In the first game of the twin bill on Saturday, he had one hit but it scored the winning run as the Demons rallied from a 5-3, ninth-inning deficit to win 6-5.
