Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 9 in this week’s USA Today/ESPN poll, marking the 34th consecutive week the Tigers are ranked in the Top 10 of a college baseball poll, a streak that began on May 19, 2008 … LSU has won 17 of its past 20 SEC series since April 25, 2008 … sophomore second baseman Tyler Hanover hit .500 (10-for-20) in the Tigers’ five games last week with one double, three RBI and four runs scored … junior catcher Micah Gibbs batted .444 (8-for-18) last week with two doubles, six RBI and two runs … Gibbs is LSU’s leading hitter in SEC play, batting .434 (33-for-76) with three doubles, three triples, 11 RBI and 13 runs … Gibbs also leads the Tigers in all games, hitting .413 (64-for-155) on the year with eight doubles, three triples, five homers, 40 RBI and 64 runs … Gibbs’ .413 cumulative batting average ranks No. 4 in the SEC … senior designated hitter Matt Gaudet hit .333 (4-for-12) in the Ole Miss series and launched three homers against the Rebels, increasing his SEC-leading season total to 14 HR … sophomore rightfielder Mikie Mahtook hit .385 (5-for-13) at Ole Miss with one double, two homers, three RBI and four runs … Mahtook leads the SEC with 16 doubles on the year, and he his third in the league in stolen bases with 20 … junior right-hander Ben Alsup turned in two brilliant relief outings last week, working nine innings in two appearances and allowing just one run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts … Alsup helped LSU defeat Northwestern State last Wednesday, firing four shutout innings while allowing two hits and recording no walks and three strikeouts … Alsup worked five relief innings at Ole Miss in Game 1 on Saturday, limiting the Rebels to one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts … LSU leads the SEC in triples this season with 23; the next-highest total of 3Bs in the league is 13 by Auburn … LSU also leads the SEC in walks received with 214; the Tigers are the only team in the league with more than 200 walks on the year.
