Men's Golf Finishes 11th in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The 23rd-ranked LSU men’s golf team wrapped up the 2009-10 regular season on Tuesday afternoon by finishing in 11th place in the final team standings at the 44th-annual Morris Williams Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Texas at the par-71 UT Golf Club.

The Tigers will now turn their attention to postseason play as they make their annual trip to St. Simons Island, Ga., next weekend to compete in the 2010 Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championships to be held April 16-18 at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club.

After opening with rounds of 8-over 292 and 14-over 298 during Monday’s action, the Tigers wrapped up the Morris Williams Intercollegiate with a 54-hole score of 60-over par 912 to place 11th in the field.

Scoring proved to be at a minimum on Tuesday afternoon with swirling winds gusting as much as 20 mph during the final round. The 20th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs posted the strongest round of the afternoon with an even-par 284 en route to the team championship with a 54-hole score of 26-over 878. Georgia earned a one-stroke victory over the homestanding and No. 7-ranked Texas Longhorns in the final standings.

While Georgia posted the lowest round of the day, the fifth-ranked Texas A&M Aggies earned a finish of third place with the second-lowest round at 7-over 291 en route to a three-round team total of 31-over 883. Texas Tech was the fourth-place finisher at 32-over 884, while Arkansas placed fifth at 34-over 886.

Georgia’s Harris English fired the lowest individual round of the day at 6-under 65 to take home medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 1-under 212 for a one-stroke victory on the leaderboard.

Junior All-American John Peterson was LSU’s top finisher in this year’s event with a three-round score of 13-over 226, including a team-low 7-over 78 in Tuesday’s final round. Fellow junior Andrew Loupe followed two strokes behind Peterson in a tie for 44th place at 15-over 228. Sophomore Josh Jones tied for 47th place at 16-over 229, while fellow sophomore Sang Yi tied for 58th place with a score of 19-over 232 and sophomore Austin Gutgsell tied for 76th place at 30-over 343.
