Mainieri Named 'Times' Sportsperson of the Year

When Paul Mainieri was hired on June 26, 2006, there was one expectation from the powers that be at LSU ? bring the Tigers’ baseball program back to elite status.

In just three short years, Mainieri has done just that.

He took the Tigers to the College World Series in 2008. He took them back in 2009 where they won the school’s sixth college baseball national championship.

Mainieri’s guidance of the Tigers to the national title has earned him the selection of The Times’ 2009 Sportsperson of the Year.

He edged out Louisiana Tech’s Teresa Weatherspoon who took over the Lady Techsters during the season and led the team to a Western Athletic Conference championship and Summer Bird trainer Tim Ice, winner of the Belmont Stakes.

Mainieri’s success wasn’t unexpected this season.
