Baseball Ranked No. 2 in Preseason Poll

BATON ROUGE — Defending NCAA champion LSU is ranked No. 2 in the 2010 Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll released Monday.

Texas, the 2009 national runners-up, is No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s 2010 poll, followed by LSU, Virginia, Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State.

Other Southeastern Conference teams appearing in the newspaper’s Top 40 include No. 9 Florida, No. 22 Ole Miss, No. 23 Arkansas, No. 28 South Carolina, No. 31 Georgia and No. 32 Vanderbilt.

“It’s great to receive this kind of recognition, and the polls create a lot of excitement for our fans, ” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “At the same time,  we know that we have a season full of challenges ahead.

“We’re definitely anxious to get started. We feel like we have the players here who know how to win and contend for championships.”

LSU opens the 2010 season at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 19 versus Centenary in Alex Box Stadium.
