A Letter from Joe Alleva

Dear Tiger Fan,

The 2009 calendar year has been another exciting one in LSU sports and I am writing to wish all of you a joyous holiday. I hope you will be able to spend time with family and friends as we reflect on the past year and look to a future with great promise.

We started the year in perfect fashion, celebrating a resounding New Year’s Eve bowl victory by the LSU football team, and we are ending it as we prepare for another New Year’s bowl game in pursuit of yet another 10-win season.

In between, every LSU team reached post-season play for the first time in school history. It was a year of growth as we opened new baseball and softball stadiums. And it was a year of success as the Tigers won an SEC title in men’s basketball, reached the Super Six in gymnastics for the second year in a row, finished in the top five in both indoor and outdoor men’s track & field and brought home our sixth national championship in baseball.

Just this fall, the Tiger volleyball team captured its first SEC title since 1991 and the soccer team had its best season in the history of the sport, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Much of LSU’s success is due to the great support of our fans. We set attendance records in several sports this year and our fans traveled in large numbers to support the Tigers in their usual SEC destinations as well as Omaha for baseball and Seattle for football.

Although the financial outlook for the coming year is challenging for our University, and in turn the athletics program, we are committed to maintaining our focus on the mission of our department: excellence in competition, distinction in the classroom and contribution to the community. We owe it to our student-athletes first and foremost, but also owe it to our fans and alumni across the globe.

Happy Holidays and best wishes for the New Year to you and your family. We look forward to seeing many of you in Orlando for the Capital One Bowl and at LSU athletic events on campus in the near future.

As always, we welcome your comments at athletics@lsu.edu. Unfortunately we cannot answer every e-mail we receive, but please be assured they are all read.

Geaux Tigers!
