Men's Basketball Team Visits Local Hospital

BATON ROUGE — An annual holiday tradition was renewed Tuesday as the LSU men’s basketball team and Coach Trent Johnson again brightened the holiday spirit by visiting patients at the local Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital.

For many seasons the team has visited the local hospital to sing Christmas carols (sometimes good, sometimes not so good but enjoyed by all) and hand out autographed basketballs and posters.

“We’re never too busy to take time and give back to our community,” Coach Johnson said. “It puts things in perspective for the players and coaches. We’re fortunate enough to be healthy and to have the ability to brighten someone’s day.”

The television crew from “Inside LSU Basketball” was also on the visit to the hospital and there will be a special feature on the visit on this week’s show that airs locally Sunday night at 10:35 p.m. on WBRZ-TV.

“We aren’t just individual basketball players. We are a team,” said LSU senior Tasmin Mitchell. “As a team we enjoy giving back to a community that supports us so much. We come here every year and it is very special to me to be able to bring some light to a child who may be less fortunate this year. I love this. This is what LSU basketball is all about.”

The Tigers return to the basketball court twice more in the final home stand of the 2009 portion of the season ? Thursday at 7 p.m. against Nicholls State and 1 p.m. on Saturday hosting Rice.
