Soccer Ranked in Top 25 for Fifth-Straight Week

BATON ROUGE — Despite suffering its first defeat of the 2008 season this past weekend, the LSU soccer team has held firm in the national rankings for the fifth consecutive week in the latest polls released by Soccer America, Soccer Buzz and Soccer Times.

The Tigers (7-1-0, 1-1-0 SEC) are ranked among the Top 15 teams in this week’s Soccer America Top 25 after receiving a No. 15 ranking on Monday, while they are ranked No. 20 in the latest Soccer Times Top 25 and No. 21 in this week’s Soccer Buzz Top 30 released Tuesday.

After kicking off SEC play with a 4-1 win over Mississippi State on Friday, LSU dropped its first decision of the season with a 1-0 shutout at the hands of Ole Miss on Sunday in Oxford.

The Tigers have never been ranked in the national polls for five straight weeks in their history as they are joined by two other SEC clubs this week. Florida is ranked as high as No. 13 nationally by Soccer America, while South Carolina is ranked No. 24 by the same publication.

The Tigers look to return to their winning ways this weekend as they wrap up a five-match road swing with a trip through the SEC East. LSU will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., on Friday night to take on the Tennessee Lady Volunteers at 6 p.m. CT followed by a trip to Athens, Ga., on Sunday afternoon to battle the Georgia Bulldogs with kickoff set for noon.

LSU will then return home for the first time in nearly one month as they play host to division foe Auburn on Oct. 10 followed by a home match against Alabama on Oct. 11.
