Softball Set to Open Fall Practice on Monday
BATON ROUGE — The 2009 LSU softball team will hold its first fall team practice at 3 p.m. Monday in the original Tiger Park.
The Tigers will practice approximately 20 times during the fall and once again host the LSU Collegiate Classic October 17-19 in the original Tiger Park.
“As a staff and team we are really excited to get started,” LSU head coach Yvette Girouard said. “We have a lot of new faces and a lot of positions to fill, so we are excited to start practice. We have had about six hours individually with the players so far, but we are excited to get on the field together and get ready to start the season.”
LSU has been participating in individual drills since September 8 with Girouard working with the pitchers, associate head coach James DeFeo working with hitting and outfielders, assistant coach Megan Smith working with pitchers and infielders and volunteer coach and former Tiger Kristen Hobbs working with hitters, catchers and infielders. The Tigers have also been working on conditioning and weightlifting.
For fall practice Girouard will welcome back eight returning players and 11 newcomers to the program. The Tigers return three position starters in junior outfielder Rachel Mitchell, junior outfielder Jazz Jackson and sophomore third baseman/catcher Jessica Mouse.
In addition, LSU returns three of last season’s four pitchers, including the team’s lone senior, Dani Hofer. Junior Cody Trahan and sophomore Casey Faile also return to bolster the Tigers’ pitching corp.
Fall practice will conclude November 19, and LSU will open the 2009 season against UAB at the Paradise Softball Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 5.
