Men's Golf Returns to National Rankings

BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s golf team has gotten off to a fast start this season with one tournament championship already under its belt, and it has cracked the nation’s Top 25 teams in both national polls released by Golfweek and Golf World on Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers are ranked No. 18 nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, while they make their season debut at No. 24 in this week’s Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll.

Led by one of the more talented young lineups in all of college golf, LSU opened the season with their first tournament championship in nearly three years with a win at the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 14 followed by a seventh-place finish at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate earlier this week.

“It’s nice any time the guys on this team are recognized for the hard work they’ve put into turning this program in the right direction,” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. “There are a lot of people out there who care about LSU Golf and who are responsible for the direction in which this program is headed. We appreciate them for what they mean to this team.

“I’m proud that they are starting to see some tangible results and are starting to see what LSU Golf can become. The student-athletes who come to LSU have big dreams, and I look forward to helping them do their best to fulfill those dreams.”

Four different Tigers have already earned Top 10 finishes this season after only three players had Top 10 finishes a year ago. Sophomores John Peterson and Clayton Rotz and freshman Sang Yi led the Tigers to victory at the Gopher Invitational with Top 10 finishes, marking the first time in five years that three Tigers earned such a finish in the same event.

Yi finished in a tie for fifth place in his collegiate debut, while Peterson placed seventh and Rotz followed closely behind in a tie for eighth place in Minnesota. Freshman Josh Jones led the squad at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate with his first career Top 10 as he tied for ninth place.

The Tigers will be back in action Oct. 13-14 as they make the trip to Choudrant, La., to tee off in the Squire Creek Invitational hosted by Louisiana Tech at Squire Creek Country Club.
