Jones Earns First Career Top 10; Golf Team Seventh

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — It only took freshman Josh Jones two tournaments to break into the Top 10 of the leaderboard for the first time in his collegiate career as he ended Tuesday’s final round in a tie for ninth place at the fourth-annual Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.

Jones, who was one of the more accomplished junior golfers in the country while earning a total of 20 Top 10 finishes in tournaments sponsored by the American Junior Golf Association prior to his arrival at LSU, posted a three-round total of 4-over par 220 for the championship.

After opening with rounds of 1-over 73 and 2-under 70 on Monday, Jones posted a 5-over par 77 in the final round at Shoal Creek Country Club to finish six shots off the pace.

LSU, which opened the final round in sole possession of second place in the team standings, fired a team score of 19-over 307 on Tuesday to finish its second tournament of the season in a tie for seventh place with a cumulative effort of 32-over 896. The Tigers played the final round with just four players as sophomore Clayton Rotz was forced to withdraw due to injury.

In his absence, sophomore Andrew Loupe carded a 3-over 75 in the final round to finish 17th with a 54-hole score of 7-over 223, while fellow sophomore John Peterson tied for 27th place at 10-over 226 and freshman Sang Yi tied for 31st place at 11-over 227. Yi posted a 5-over par 77 in the final round with Peterson coming in at 6-over 78 for the day.

The Baylor Bears were the wire-to-wire winners of the fourth-annual Shoal Creek Intercollegiate as they finished two strokes ahead of the Ole Miss Rebels with a three-day total of 16-over 880.

The chase for medalist honors quickly turned into a two-man race on the final day of competition with Zack Sucher of UAB and Rhys Enoch of East Tennessee State finishing four shots clear of the rest of the field and tying for top honors with a 54-hole score of 2-under 214.

The Tigers will return to action in three weeks as they make the trip to Choudrant, La., to tee it up at the Squire Creek Invitational hosted by Louisiana Tech at Squire Creek Country Club. The two day, 54-hole tournament is scheduled for Oct. 13-14, and the Tigers will be looking to capture the team title after finishing runner-up in the event a year ago.
