Women's Golf Sixth in Season-Opening Event

HANAHAN, S.C. — The LSU women’s golf team, ranked 13th in the pre-season polls, posted the sixth lowest 54-hole score in team history as they finished in sixth place in the season-opening College of Charleston Cougar Classic here Tuesday at the Yeomans Hall Golf Course.

LSU finished the final round with a 3-over par round of 291, finishing the three-day event with a 54-hole score of 878 (297-290-291), 14-over par. That equals the sixth-lowest aggregate score in the now 30-year history of the LSU women’s program.

Georgia finished up as the wire-to-wire winner, also posting a 291 on the day to come in at 6-under par 858 (288-279-291). The Lady Bulldogs won by five shots over Alabama who had a 6-under par final round to finish the tournament at 1-under 863 (293-288-282). North Carolina was third at 8-over 872, followed by Virginia at 10th over in fourth and Florida State three shots ahead of LSU in fifth at 11-over 875.

Sophomore Lindy LaBauve was the low scorer on LSU’s day, getting two late birdies to finish at 2-under 70 to finish in a tie for 21st. It was sophomore Megan McChrystal and freshman Jacqueline Hedwall who finished in the top 15 after 54 holes with scores of 1-over par 217. McChrystal, a second-team All-SEC selection a year ago as a freshman, shot even-par 72 on the final day to go with earlier rounds of 74-71, while Hedwall finished with 75 after back-to-back opening rounds of one-under 71.

Both finished in a group tied for 14th place in the competition that was one on the final day by a rallying Caroline Westrup of Florida State. Westrup, the winner of the 2008 LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic this past March, had a final round 66 to finish at 10-under par 206, two shots clear of runner-up Whitney Neuhauser of Virginia at 208. Marta Silva of Georgia finished third at six-under 210 and second round leader Mallory Hetzel of Georgia fell to a tie for fourth after a two-over 74 that left her at five-under 211.

On the final day, LSU also had a 74 from Amalie Valle and a 75 from Nicole Crochet.

“This is a great starting point for us,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen of her first tournament of her 25th season as head coach at LSU. “I’m pleased with the things we did in the first tournament but we still have work to do and the girls know that. We played consistent golf and showed in the first round the resolve not to get a slow start get away from us. We will work hard the next three weeks and get ready for our next event.”

The Lady Tigers will be back in action October 10-12 at the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Invitational hosted by the University of Tennessee.
