Soccer Continues Climb in National Rankings

BATON ROUGE — Following a dominating 7-0 win over Centenary on Sunday afternoon, the LSU soccer team continues to climb in the national rankings as it has reached its highest ranking in program history in three national polls released this week.

Despite a 13-day layoff that saw three matches canceled due to the impact of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike on the Gulf Coast, the Tigers are off to a perfect 5-0 start this fall as they prepare for their final non-conference match on the road against Oklahoma on Friday at 7 p.m.

With a win, LSU would set a school record with its sixth straight win to open a season after tying the existing mark of five wins with its win over Centenary on Sunday.

LSU enters the match with a No. 11 ranking in the new Soccer America Top 25 released Monday, while they have climbed three spots in two other polls to No. 15 in the Soccer Buzz Top 30 and to No. 17 in the Soccer Times Top 25 released Tuesday morning. This is the team’s highest ranking in each of the three national polls as they have now been ranked for three straight weeks.

It also marks the third straight week that LSU is the highest ranked team in the SEC in two of the three polls as they are joined in the Top 20 by Florida and South Carolina the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz rankings. Tennessee has fallen out of the rankings for the first time this season.

After traveling to Norman, Okla., to take on the Sooners on Friday, the Tigers will continue their five-game road trip next weekend as they begin the defense of their SEC Western Division crown with the start of league play. LSU will take on Mississippi State on Sept. 26 in Starkville, Miss., followed by a match against Ole Miss on Sept. 28 in Oxford, Miss.
