Women's Tennis Enjoys Success in Gopher Invitational
MINNEAPOLIS — Several members of the LSU women’s tennis team shined in the first action of the fall by winning 11 of 15 singles matches and sweeping all four doubles matches at the Baseline Tennis Center on the first day of the Gopher Invitational on Friday.
A host of Lady Tigers performed well on the day, paced by two-time All-American senior and 15th-ranked Megan Falcon who surrendered only four games in two matches.
Falcon defeated Eastern Michigan’s Karina Ahuja and Iowa State’s Erin Karonis by identical 6-0, 6-2 scores to advance to the semifinals of the Vikings Flight.
Eleventh-ranked Falcon and Mykala Hedberg cruised to victory over Iowa’s Merel Beelen and Allison Majercik 8-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Doubles Flight.
“Overall it was a satisfactory day in our first tournament,” assistant coach Lisa Jackson said. “We are really excited because we showed a lot of fight in our matches, and we look forward to continuing the fight in doubles and singles for the rest of the tournament.”
Hedberg also advanced to the semifinals of the Vikings Flight by beating Nebraska’s Jana Albers in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 before pulling out a hard-fought match against host Minnesota’s Tijana Koprivica 7-6 (4), 2-6, (10-5) in a third set super tiebreaker.
Nicole Kantor started off her junior season strong by winning her first two matches. Kantor breezed past Gustavus Adolphus’ Samantha Frank 6-0, 6-1 and came back to defeat Phoebe Walker of Northern Iowa 3-6, 6-2, (10-3). With the victories Kantor moved into the semifinal round of the Timberwolves Flight.
Like Kantor, Smith and Wolf each dominated their first opponents. Smith defeated Minnesota’s Jackie Sperling 6-1, 6-2, and Wolf knocked off Beelen 6-1, 6-1. However, both would have to compete hard to earn their spot in the semifinals of the Timberwolves Flight. Smith rallied to beat Majercik 2-6, 6-3, (11-9), and Wolf pulled out a three-setter 6-4, 5-7, (10-3) over Air Force’s Christen Monreal.
After starting off 2-0, one of the freshmen will suffer the first loss of her career as Smith and Wolf will face each other in the semifinal round.
Hannah Robinson rebounded after losing her opening match in the Vikings Flight by beating Northern Iowa’s Sampada Kanade in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
In the Minnesota Flight Robinson and Wolf paired up to defeat Eastern Michigan’s Ahuja and Marcela Rivero 8-3, and Kantor and Smith teamed up to beat Northern Iowa’s Kanade and Walker 8-2.
Action continues Saturday at 9 a.m. with the quarterfinal round in doubles and the semifinals in singles.
