Hurricane Ike Cancels Tennis Trip to Houston

BATON ROUGE — Hurricane Ike has forced a cancellation of the men’s tennis Rice Invitational, the university announced late Wednesday.

The tournament was scheduled to begin Friday, but has been cancelled due to the potential effects of Ike on Houston and the surrounding areas.

“The guys are eager to compete, but they understand that the decision was made with their best interest in mind,” said head coach Jeff Brown.

Sophomores Sebastian Carlsson and Julien Gauthier competed in the tournament last season.

Carlsson highlighted the final day of the tournament for LSU as he won the B Singles Bracket title and etched a 3-0 mark during his first tournament for the Tigers, losing only one set.

Gauthier earned a 2-1 overall mark and defeated SMU’s Adham el-Effendi in his final match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

The fall season is now set to begin Sept. 19 when the Tigers will travel to Lafayette, La., as they open play in the ULL Invitational.
