Hurricane Delays Start of Softball Fall Workouts
BATON ROUGE — The LSU softball team began individual workouts on Monday, six days after it was originally scheduled to start, head coach Yvette Girouard announced.
Individual drills and workouts had been slated to begin September 2, but Hurricane Gustav knocked plans off track and forced the team to suspend workouts until school resumed Monday.
Despite damage to the stadium and the setback in individual workouts, Girouard said fall practice is still on schedule to open September 29 and run through November 19 and will include 20 practices at the old Tiger Park.
The team welcomes back eight returning players who led the Tigers to a 44-18 record, a No. 15 final national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. Girouard also welcomes in 11 talented newcomers, including 10 freshmen and junior transfer Kirsten Shortridge.
The Tigers will also host the LSU Fall Collegiate Classic which runs October 17-19 in Tiger Park. LSU will kick off the tournament October 17 by facing Nicholls State in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Four teams besides LSU and Nicholls will compete in the tournament as Louisiana College, LSU-Alexandria, Chipola Community College and Louisiana-Monroe will make the trek to Baton Rouge.
LSU will open the 2009 season at the Paradise Softball Classic in Honolulu on February 5 against UAB.
