Cluskey, Venus Earn Preseason ITA Ranking

BATON ROUGE — Two members of the LSU men’s tennis team are listed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Associate preseason rankings, the organization announced.

Senior Michael Venus and James Cluskey made a strong debut at No. 5 in doubles. The Tiger tandem finished last season at a peak position of No. 16 in the ITA rankings with a final mark of 16-6.

Venus also listed in the singles rankings at No. 20. He jumped 11 spots in the preseason poll from his final rank of No. 31 for the 2007-08 season, during which time he earned a 14-9 record and was named to the 2008 First-Team All-SEC.

Both Venus and Cluskey were also named as selections to the 2008 D’Novo All-American Championships. The No. 5 duo will compete in the doubles main draw. Each will also compete in the singles portion of the tournament. Venus will compete in the main draw and Cluskey will begin in the qualifying round.

The ITA also selected six Tigers for the pre-qualifying round. Sebastian Carlsson, Julien Gauthier, Ryan Lissner, Jonathan Tragardh, Mark Bowtell and Neal Skupski will have a chance to compete at the event as well.
