Women's Tennis' Falcon, Hedberg Earn Top-15 Rankings

BATON ROUGE, La. ? Two LSU women’s tennis players are ranked in the top 15 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason rankings released Thursday, marking the second straight season the Lady Tigers have earned the distinction.

Two-time All-American Megan Falcon checks in at No. 15 in the singles rankings while Falcon and fellow senior Mykala Hedberg are ranked No. 11 in the doubles rankings.

Last season, Falcon was ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll while Falcon and junior Hannah Robinson were ranked No. 13 in doubles.

In addition to their top 15 rankings, Falcon and Hedberg have both been selected to compete in the prestigious Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship beginning at the end of the month.

This marks the third straight season Falcon has earned a ranking in the top 15 as the Alameda, Calif., native earned the top spot in the preseason ranking last season after finishing No. 2 at the end of her sophomore season in 2006-07.

During their sophomore campaigns Falcon and Hedberg teamed to finish 9-4 and earn a listing as one of the top 60 doubles teams in the nation. Last season the Lady Tiger tandem finished 12-5 and earned the No. 28 spot in the final ITA doubles poll and a berth in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In two seasons playing together at the top of the lineup, the pair has established an 8-4 record against ranked opponents.

Falcon will be making her third straight appearance at the All-American Championship. In both her sophomore and junior seasons Falcon suffered one loss in the tournament en route to claiming the consolation singles championship. For the second straight season Falcon earned an automatic bid to the main draw of the tournament which begins in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Oct. 2.

Falcon and Hedberg narrowly missed entrance to the main draw as the duo was listed as the first pair on the alternates list. Should one of the 12 doubles teams with automatic bids withdraw from the main draw of the tournament, then Falcon and Hedberg would be first to take the spot. As of now, the pair will compete as the No. 1 seed in the qualifying doubles bracket which begins in Pacific Palisades on Sept. 30.

Hedberg, who has competed at the No. 2 position behind Falcon for the last two seasons, earned a spot in the prequalifying singles bracket which will take place at Pepperdine on Sept. 27-28.

Robinson, who finished second to Falcon last season in singles victories with 25, is listed as the 25th alternate for the prequalifying singles bracket and would have a chance to compete if enough players withdrew from the tournament.

Before the All-American Championships, LSU will open up fall play Sept. 12-14 at the Gopher Invitational hosted by Minnesota.
