Martinez Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? LSU volleyball’s Elena Martinez has begun the 2008 season just as she left off the last one ? being recognized by the Southeastern Conference for her outstanding defense.

The senior libero, who is the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year, was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in last weekend’s Bluejay Invitational in Omaha, Neb., the league office announced Tuesday.

Martinez recorded 57 digs in the Tigers’ three matches, averaging 4.38 digs per set, at the Bluejay Invitational. The New Orleans native also tallied 13 kills, 11 assists and two service aces. She was named to the all-tournament team for her performance.

Thirty-one of her digs came in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Texas A&M, the most digs she’s had in a single match since grabbing 34 against Iowa on Sept. 8 of last year. Martinez’s second dig against Texas A&M gave her 900 for her career, and she is now less than 50 away from picking up her 1,000th career dig.

This is the first SEC honor for the Tigers this season and the third time Martinez has been named the league’s defensive player of the week in her career.
