Soccer Earns Highest Ranking in Program History

BATON ROUGE¬†— The LSU soccer team has raced out of the blocks to a 3-0 start this fall and has been rewarded with its highest national ranking in program history as it is No. 17 in the latest Soccer America Top 25 poll released Monday morning.

In fact, the Tigers are the top-ranked club from the Southeastern Conference in this week’s poll as the Tennessee Lady Volunteers are the only other nationally-ranked team at No. 22.

After opening the season on Aug. 22 with a 2-0 shutout of South Alabama, the Tigers earned their spot in this week’s rankings with a dominating 4-1 home win over then 25th-ranked BYU on Aug. 25 and a 2-0 shutout of Northwestern on Saturday in their first road trip of the season.

LSU’s No. 17 ranking this week eclipses the team’s previous high of No. 19 earned last season in the Soccer America Top 25 released on Oct. 8, 2007.

The Tigers will put their new ranking and undefeated record on the line tonight as they square off against the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers at 6 p.m. in the final game of the inaugural Lakeside Invitational hosted by Northwestern at picturesque Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. They will look open up at 4-0 for the second straight season after opening the 2007 season at 5-0.
