Rather Named to SEC Golf's Community Service team

BATON ROUGE — LSU senior golfer Alexis Rather was named as the LSU representative to the Southeastern Conference Community Service team for women’s golf announced on Thursday.

The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports.  The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.  This is the fourth annual women’s golf Community Service Team.

Rather is a representative for women’s golf on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  This year, Alexis pitched in with helping build Polk Elementary a new playground.  She was one of the student-athletes to team up with Shaquille O’Neal and spend the day creating the kids a new and safe environment to play in.  She also was a volunteer at LSU University College’s Family Association Weekend Meet and Greet this fall.  Alexis participated in the First Tee event at Gillis Long Center in Carville, La.  The First Tee of Carville is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing golfing opportunities and life-skills education to the at-risk youth who are enrolled in the Job Challenge, Youth Challenge, and Job Corps program at the Gillis W. Long Center.

She also joined her team in visiting the children at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in town, where they went around visiting each patient’s room on the pediatric floor to brighten their day.  She also spearheaded the Women’s Golf station for the Halloween BOOzar, where a Halloween decorated miniature putting green was set up.  She also interacted with the kids that came through, handed out candy, and signed autographs.  She took part in the Christmas Toy Drive, where women’s golf adopted an underprivileged little girl for Christmas.  The team raised money and made presents possible at Christmas time to the child and her family.
