Track & Field Teams Ranked in Nation's Top 4

BATON ROUGE — The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its first updated Top 25 power ranking of the outdoor season Wednesday, and the Lady Tigers are No. 2 with the Tigers coming in at No. 4 after three weeks of competition.

The USTFCCCA Top 25 power ranking is based on the performances accumulated by athletes from each team during the course of the outdoor season.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers are fresh off a strong performance at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this past weekend that produced a combined eight event winners and four NCAA leading performances in one of the premier outdoor competitions of the collegiate season.

The squads boast the nation’s No. 1 performer in the 100-meter dash as both Kelly Baptiste and Richard Thompson clocked world-leading times in the event en route to sweeping SEC Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday.

Thompson’s winning time of 10.0 seconds in the men’s invitational 100-meter dash is a new school record, eclipsing the previous mark of 10.02 set by teammate Trindon Holliday last season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. It also breaks the Mike A. Myers Stadium record of 10.06 set by Arkansas great and international superstar Tyson Gay in 2004.

Baptiste enjoyed a record-setting performance of her own as she won the women’s invitational 100-meter dash with a new personal best of 11.06. Her time also improves her already established women’s national record for Trinidad and Tobago of 11.08.

In addition, the Tigers won their fifth straight Clyde Littlefield University 4×100-Meter Relay with an NCAA leading time at 38.74, while the Lady Tigers won their fourth 4×400-meter relay title all-time at the Texas Relays with a national leading time of 3 minutes, 29.72 seconds.

The squads added wins in the women’s 4×800 and men’s distance medley relays, while Nickiesha Wilson won the women’s 100-meter hurdles and Holliday won the men’s university 100 meters.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers return to action this weekend as they host the Tiger Invitational at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on Saturday before wrapping up the regular season with the LSU Alumni Gold on April 19 followed by a trip to Philadelphia, Pa., for the 114th running of the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field from April 24-26.
